Some damage is not obvious until long after the repair. Stress to the foundation won’t show until things fall apart years later. A building will leak days after rain. A TV will fail months after a thunderstorm. You won’t notice a particular shirt missing until years after a move. Worse For Wear, the latest single from Austin synth-pop outfit Holy Wire, reckons with the fallout from a relationship a decade ago. Through fuzzy synth hooks, propulsive drum machines, and strident bass guitar, Holy Wire conveys the tension of reconciling regret and acceptance. “I’ll never be who I was before I met you / but that’s alright, we all move on, whether or not we want to,” the second verse begins, detailing a reluctant coming-to-terms.
Holy Wire is the project of Alain Paradis, started after moving from Brooklyn to Austin during the pandemic. After going through a break-up and giving up drinking a month into the move, Paradis found himself without friends, family, or community, in a city barely beginning to emerge from lockdown. With ample time to reflect on past relationships, he threw himself into writing music, while slowly integrating himself in the local music community. Holy Wire joins a small but growing local scene for synth music, playing alongside local breakout acts Urban Heat and Haunt Me, and fitting more broadly into the ranks of modern bands excavating the recesses of 80s post-punk and cold-wave to create their own vehicles for expression; bands like Black Marble, Teleman, Automatic, Nation Of Language, and late-night TV titans Future Islands. In less than a year performing, Holy Wire has shared the stage with The KVB and New York minimal wave act Xeno And Oaklander.
Lyrically, Worse For Wear favors earnest sentiment, but much like new-wave progenitors like The Smiths or Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, it touches on a kind of irony by pitting melancholic lyrics against danceable synth-pop. “I’m here and you’re out there / and we are both all the worse for wear,” ends the song on a bittersweet note, still longing for answers but accepting that we don’t always find them. Worse For Wear releases on September 14th, with 7” vinyl by Naturally Records and tape by Pink Noise Tapes. Holy Wire will kick off a mini-tour with an Austin release show at Mohawk with local acts Witches Exist and Body Tape.
