About Artist:
Japanese duo Pasocom Music Club blur retro sounds with modern electronic touches to create dizzying dance tracks balanced between the underground and the pop sphere. They’ve captured attention for their own eclectic songs and live shows, while also writing and producing for an array of other artists in their home country. Even though the pair gravitate towards ‘90s synthesizers to make the base of their sound, they continually find new angles on familiar instruments.
The group, consisting of members Aoi Shibata and Masato Nishiyama, emerged from Osaka in 2015. Initially creating jaunty originals and covering songs by pioneering electronic artists such as Yellow Magic Orchestra, Pasocom Music Club caught attention for a sound nodding to the past but sounding of the moment. They showed off a flair for pop structure on 2017’s dazzling dance of Park City (released by influential Japanese netlabel Maltine Records) and dabbled in city pop experimentation later that year on She Is A.
Gaining momentum and playing more live shows, the duo released their debut full-length album Dream Walk in 2018, using the limitations of their retro synthesizers to craft galloping synth-pop accented by human vocals. The following year’s Night Flow explored moodier ambience and swifter tempos, while 2021 saw them sprinkle in New Age elements and fresh sonic textures for See-Voice, while also expanding the circle of vocalists they incorporated into their shimmering creations.
The pair started earning more attention in Japan, leading to the chance to create songs for prominent talents such as Kana Hanazawa, Takashi Fuji and more, while also working on music for properties such as Pokemon and Konami’s beatmania game series. They’ve also remixed artists ranging from Kansai’s tofubeats, shoegaze band For Tracy Hyde, and chiptune outfit YMCK.
Reflecting the space between the pop mainstream and club circuit they find themselves in today, Pasocom Music Club’s fourth album FINE LINE tightropes between some of the catchiest material they’ve ever written — complete with appearances from J-pop-meets-rap acts like chelmico — while also exploring a wide range of dance sub-genres. Whatever direction they go in, Pasocom Music Club always find a unique way of approaching and linking electronic music from throughout history.
